Movie Review: The Water Diviner (2014)

Story Summary:

“An Australian man travels to Turkey after the Battle of Gallipoli to try to locate his three missing sons.”

While that story summary may seem so little, it carries with it so much more. It is a story of love between a Father and his Sons, a love that crosses oceans. And when the movie ends, it will you leave you sad and happy at the same time.

Beautifully shot and wonderfully acted. I had seen the trailers for it and it peaked my interest in the film, but not enough to make it a must see. But now that I have seen it, I would recommend it to anybody. The shots and locations were beautiful when they needed to be, and utterly depressing when it was called for.

The Water Diviner was released in 2014 but is just getting its US release now, and is opening in slightly more than 300 theaters during its opening week this week, and represents Russell Crowe’s theatrical film directing effort.

This movie has already racked up some award nominations and wins, which is probably part of the reason it is now being brought to the US. Nominated at the Australian Film Institute for Best Lead Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Production Design, while winning for Best Supporting Actor, Best Film, and Best Costume Design.

Simply put, it a well done movie that will have you happy, sad, and sometimes laughing. Go see it, sit back, and enjoy a movie that is a rare gem during this time of year.
