Weekend Box Office Results (May 8 – May 10)

Without blinking an eye, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron stayed in the number 1 position this week, adding another $77.7 million to its domestic total. This gives it $313.4 million for a domestic total and a worldwide total of $875.8 million. Rapidly coming in on the $1 billion mark, but whether it will top Furious 7 for the year is still yet to be determined.

New this week at number 2 is the Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara comedy, Hot Pursuit, bringing in just $13.9 million in its opening weekend.

Holding at number 3 is the Blake Lively and Harrison Ford movie, Age of Adaline with $5.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $31.7 million.

At number 4 is the car action franchise, Furious 7, bringing in an additional $5.4 million. This raises its domestic total to $338.5 million, and its worldwide total to $1.46 billion, making this the number 1 movie for the year so far.

Hanging in there to take the number 5 spot is the Kevin James sequel, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, making $5.3 million with a domestic total of $58.1 million.

Expect to see some movies drop off this week as two big movies are entering the ring. The mad one returns in Mad Max: Fury Road, and the musical comedy sequel, Pitch Perfect 2. Both of these have the possibility of doing some damage to the top 5, but none of them will dethrone the current number 1 this week.

Movie Review: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Story Summary:

“An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Tom Hardy), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland. Know how people slow down when the see an accident on the side of the road? This movie is filled with them, and there is no need to slow down or keep your eyes on the road. And these aren’t some bit of CGI wonder thrown on the screen. Oh no, these are, for the most part, old school physical stunts, played out to perfection.

Want some numbers though? How about these:

110 Tons of Steel

330 Major Stunt Sequences

20 Nitrogen-Canon Vehicle Rollover Stunts

70 Ultra-High Risk  Stunts

0 Significant Accidents

But hey, what is a movie filled with stunts if it doesn’t have good acting in it also? Well, that would be the movie Hooper with Burt Reynolds. This movie though, is not that. Starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, they knock it out of the park together. More so for Charlize Theron in my opinion. Not only does she play a bad-ass, but she plays a one-armed bad-ass on top of that. And I don’t want to take away from the fantastic job that Nicholas Hoult (Beast, X-Men First Class) did as Nux either. Awesome job by him to the point that I didn’t even realize that it was him at any point, and I was bought in on him as the character. Fantastic job.

And have you seen the previews with the drums and guitar? You know, this guy?

They are playing the soundtrack in those scenes. F’n awesome! Over the top? Absolutely, but who cares! This movie is nothing but an in your face, nitro laced, adrenalin ride.

In Your Face Action!

Hey, I could talk numbers and actors and ability until I am blue in the face, but the fact is that if you enjoy action movies, go see this. If you like movies about fighting for survival after we destroy the Earth, then go see this movie. If you are looking for the next Oscar movie, then don’t go see this movie. But man, it was a fun and entertaining movie to watch. So grab some popcorn and soda, sit back, and enjoy the ride.
