Weekend Box Office Results (May 8 – May 10)

Without blinking an eye, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron stayed in the number 1 position this week, adding another $77.7 million to its domestic total. This gives it $313.4 million for a domestic total and a worldwide total of $875.8 million. Rapidly coming in on the $1 billion mark, but whether it will top Furious 7 for the year is still yet to be determined.

New this week at number 2 is the Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara comedy, Hot Pursuit, bringing in just $13.9 million in its opening weekend.

Holding at number 3 is the Blake Lively and Harrison Ford movie, Age of Adaline with $5.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $31.7 million.

At number 4 is the car action franchise, Furious 7, bringing in an additional $5.4 million. This raises its domestic total to $338.5 million, and its worldwide total to $1.46 billion, making this the number 1 movie for the year so far.

Hanging in there to take the number 5 spot is the Kevin James sequel, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, making $5.3 million with a domestic total of $58.1 million.

Expect to see some movies drop off this week as two big movies are entering the ring. The mad one returns in Mad Max: Fury Road, and the musical comedy sequel, Pitch Perfect 2. Both of these have the possibility of doing some damage to the top 5, but none of them will dethrone the current number 1 this week.

Weekend Box Office Results (May 1 – May 3)

BOOM goes the dynamite! The only question going in to this weekend was how much money was it going to actually make, and now we have the answer. Taking number 1 this week is Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, making a staggering $187.6 million dollars in its opening weekend. What is even more astounding to me is that the first Avengers movie still holds the top record for largest opening weekend with $207.4 million. The question will be whether or not Age of Ultron has less of a drop off from week one to week two, as Avengers had a 50.3% drop between weeks. If Age of Ultron can reduce that number, it still has the ability to top the first movie. Regardless of that, it is fairly certain that this movie will join the billion dollar club when it is all said and done.

The shocker for me this week was a movie that has managed to climb up the charts from number 3 to number 2, and that is Age of Adaline, starring Blake Lively and Harrison Ford. Age of Adaline made $6.2 million this weekend bringing its total to $23.4 million.

At number 3, down from number 1, is the current reigning and defending champion for best box office of the year, Furious 7, making an additional $6.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $330.5 million, and its world-wide box office to $1.4 billion. Only time will tell if any movie has what it takes to topple it. I have a feeling something will ‘awaken’ in December to take it down.

At number 4 this week is the Kevin James movie, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 making an additional $5.5 million and bringing its domestic total to $51.1 million.

And at number 5 this week, down from number 4, and marking its 6th week in the top 5, is the animated movie, Home, with Jim Parsons and Rihanna, making $3.3 million and bringing its domestic total to $158.1 million.

Is there anything in the near future that will be able to stop the juggernaut that is Avengers: Age of Ultron?

Weekend Box Office Results (Apr 24 – Apr 26)

For its fourth straight, and final week, Furious 7 has ended up in the number 1 slot as it took in $18.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $320.5 million and its worldwide release total to $1.3 Billion. And although Furious 7 has completely dominated the box office the last 4 weeks, I am pretty confident that at least one of the many movies coming out next week will finally knock it off its pedestal.

Holding strong at number 2 this week is the horribly reviewed, but still making money as it seems everybody likes to watch a fat guy fall down, is Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, with $15.5 million, and bringing its total to $43.9 million.

Jumping in to number 3 on the charts is the Blake Lively film about a woman who doesn’t grow old, The Age of Adaline, taking in $13.3 million in its opening week.

Staying at number 4 this week is the Fox Studios animated flick, Home, about a lovable alien voiced by Jim Parsons trying to help a little girl find her Mother.

And dropping to number 5 this week from number 3 is the one screen horror flick, Unfriended. No, this isn’t a movie about what happens to people when somebody unfriends them on Facebook, although that might be something to work on. No, this is a cross between the found footage films like Blair Witch, and campy horror films like I Know What You Did Last Summer, and then given a more modern twist. In this case, it is online. Unfriended did $6.2 million, giving it a domestic total of $25.1 million.

There is only one wide release movie coming out this week, as nobody else dare to release for fear of making no money what-so-ever in the theaters. Avengers: Age of Ultron, the sequel to the wildly successful 2012 Avengers ($623.3 million domestic, $1.5 billion worldwide) opens this week and is going to thoroughly destroy every other movie out at the time.

Weekend Box Office Results (Apr 10 – Apr 12)

This week was almost a complete bust this week, so lets just jump in to the top 5 this weekend.

MV5BMTQxOTA2NDUzOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzY2MTMxMzE@._V1_SX640_SY720_

In an absolute shocker (to absolutely no one), Furious 7 reigns as king of the hill again this week, making $29 million, bringing its domestic total to $294.4 million and making it the first movie this year to break the $1 billion barrier worldwide with $1.15 BILLION worldwide, and surpassing the number 1 movie for all of 2014, Transformers 4: Age of Extinction.

And this is just the START of the Summer Movie Season. We still have Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, Hunger Games, and a little movie called Star Wars: The Force Awakens, to name just a few.

Jumping in at number 2 this week is the Kevin James comedy, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 with $24 million, proving once again that inept, fat guys, falling down and hurting themselves make for good comedy.

We get surprised at number 3 as the horror flick, Unfriended, jumped on the charts with its opening week with $16 million. I’m sure that Universal are excited for this number as it was a very low-budget film to make by the looks of it. Can you say sequel?

At number 4, falling from number 2, is the animated flick Home, with $10.3 million, bringing its domestic total to $142.6 million. Admit it, that damn alien was too cute. I’ve heard some complaints from people that they didn’t see any advertisements for it. I think those people don’t have kids, or the kids aren’t watching any broadcast television, because I saw advertisements all the time for it. Or maybe I just watch too much television.

And at number 5, screw you to everybody that saw it and everybody that took their significant other to see it, is The Longest Ride, making $6.8 million on its domestic total of $23.5 million. Please, let this be the end, if I have to type The Longest Ride one more time, it will be too much. If I ever see another Nicholas Sparks movie on the movie list, it will be too soon.

And now that I look at last weeks predictions, it doesn’t look like it was THAT bad. I got the number 1 and number 5 dead on the nose, while I got Home and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 on the list. I missed with putting Monkey Kingdom on the list instead of Unfriended.

Only two wide release movies this week, that being The Age Of Adaline, and Little Boy, neither of which is going to make dent into what is your number 1 movie next week.

Top 5 Predictions

1. Furious 7

2. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2

3. Unfriended

4. Home

5. The Age of Adaline

New This Week (Apr 14 – Apr 20)

Four new releases coming this week, and most of them won’t put a dent in the box office thanks to Furious 7.

In my own particular order:

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2

Mall_Cop2_Quad

After six years of keeping our malls safe, Paul Blart (Kevin James) has earned a well-deserved vacation. He heads to Vegas with his teenage daughter before she heads off to college. But safety never takes a holiday and when duty calls, Blart answers.

Call me a fool, but I hold a soft spot in my heart for the first Paul Blart: Mall Cop. I didn’t see it in the theaters, but there is something about a mustached fat man on a Segway just trying to do his job that hits me right in the feels. (My wife hates “the feels”, so this is just to piss her off. 🙂 ) Am I expecting much from this film? Not really, but if it makes me laugh a few times, then I think it will be a win for me.

Unfriended

unfriended

While video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself exactly one year ago. At first they think it’s a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends’ darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something out of this world, something that wants them dead. Told entirely from a young girl’s computer desktop, CYBERNATURAL redefines ‘found footage’ for a new generation of teens.

This is a movie that first came out in limited release last year under the title CYBERNATURAL, and is finally getting its wide release. I’m down for a scary movie, and this seems to fit the bill. It looks to be a cross of I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Blair Witch Project, but it is something I will probably see with my wife.

Child 44

88937-child-44-uk-poster

Based on the first of a trilogy by Tom Rob Smith and set in the Stalin era of the Soviet Union. The plot is about an idealistic pro-Stalin security officer who decides to investigate a series of child murders in a country where supposedly this sort of crime doesn’t exist. The state would not hear of the existence of a child murderer let alone a serial killer. He gets demoted and exiled but decides, with just the help of his wife, to continue pursuing the case.

With Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman, and Tom Hardy in this movie, you would think it would be something to really get me to go see it, but from the trailer, I have no interest in seeing this movie. I don’t know if it is the setting, or what, but i my interest is at zero.

Monkey Kingdom

monkey_kingdom_xlg

A nature documentary that follows a newborn monkey and its mother as they struggle to survive within the competitive social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, a dynamic group of monkeys who live in ancient ruins found deep in the storied jungles of South Asia.

It’s a movie about monkey. Cute, adorable, furry little monkeys. What’s not to like about it? Honestly, this looks like a great movie alternative to take the little ones to, especially if they have already seen Home. We might be seeing this one with our little one if the time permits, but I don’t expect it to spend a lot of time in the theaters.

And there you have it folks. Is there a particular movie you want to see out of this list?

Weekend Box Office Results (Apr 10 – Apr 12)

I managed to get all the top 5 movies correct this week, but missed on the order. Please, stop seeing Nicholas Sparks shit! Anyways…

MV5BMTQxOTA2NDUzOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzY2MTMxMzE@._V1_SX640_SY720_

In something that was a shocker to almost nobody, Furious 7 remained in the top spot this week making $60.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $252.5 million. It seems that every year, the start of the summer blockbuster movies comes sooner and sooner, and this looks like it might be the start for this year. Expect this movie to continue to dominate next week as well.

Staying at number 2 this week is the animated movie, Home, with $19 million, bringing its domestic total to $129.5 million, just short of its production budget. Timing is everything in this movie as it was released in time for kids on their spring break.

Jumping into number 3 is The Longest Ride, another Nicholas Sparks movie that tells the same story as every other Nicholas Sparks movie, and made $13.5 million.

Dropping from number 3 to number 4 is the buddy comedy Get Hard, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, making $8.6 million with a domestic total of $71.2 million. While not a great movie, with only a budget of $40 million, I would consider this movie a success.

And at number 5 this week is the Disney Live Action adaptation of Cinderella. Cinderella made $7.2 million, bringing its domestic total to a very successful 180.7 million.

Plenty of competition this week as we have a sequel, a Disney documentary, a mystery thriller, a drama, and a horror film all opening this week.

Top 5 Predictions

1. Furious 7

2. Home

3. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2

4. Monkey Kingdom

5. The Longest Ride
